Goo Shrine

Renowned as a guardian deity for strong legs and safe mobility, this shrine attracts worshippers from all over Japan.Within the grounds stand sacred boar statues (komainoshishi) dedicated by devoted followers—welcoming visitors at the entrance in place of the more common guardian dogs. For this reason, the shrine is affectionately known as the “Boar Shrine.”Boars, which hold deep significance here, are symbols of fertility and vitality, and are believed to bring blessings for prosperity of descendants and safe child-rearing.A Shinto wedding ceremony at Goō Shrine unfolds in an atmosphere that is both solemn and elegant. As the rhythmic sound of drums resonates, the couple proceeds before the deities, while the refined melodies of gagaku (ancient court music) fill the sacred space.During the kagura dance, performed to pray for the couple’s everlasting prosperity (iyasaka), the ceremony reaches its most dignified and awe-inspiring moment.After the ceremony, couples may also enjoy a special plan featuring a graceful ride in the traditional rickshaw “Kotobuki-go,” offering an elegant stroll through the shrine grounds and the surrounding Kyoto Imperial Palace area.
